LIVE: Huge delays as stretch of M6 shut after overnight roadworks - latest updates

There are huge delays on a stretch of the M6 this morning due a full closure on the northbound side.

National Highways said an 'infrastructure defect' was uncovered during planned overnight roadworks. The northbound carriageway remains fully closed between junction 18 for Holmes Chapel and junction 19 for Knutsford.

There are currently delays of around 90 minutes with queues building up to the closure. Engineers are on the scene to 'investigate'.

The road will not be reopened until it is deemed safe. A diversion route has been put in place in the area.

National Highways said: "The M6 is closed northbound between J18 (Holmes Chapel) and J19 (Knutsford) due to an infrastructure defect that was discovered during overnight planned works.

"Specialist engineers are working at the scene to investigate and assess the situation to reopen the road as soon as it is safe."

A tweet added: "There are currently delays of 90 mins on approach to closure."

According to traffic alert service Inrix, congestion on the northbound carriageway is back to junction 17 for Sandbach.

Traffic is also heavy through Sandbach.
