LIVE: Cordon in place and bomb disposal units called to 'suspicious' suitcase on Stockport train station footbridge

A large cordon is in place with trains cancelled and bomb units called after reports of a 'suspicious' incident near to Stockport railway station.

Police, fire crews and paramedics are in attendance on Greek Street in Stockport this evening, with a 200m cordon currently in place while emergency crews work at the scene.

The incident is focussed around a footbridge at Stockport railway station with all trains currently unable to serve the station and Northern Rail issuing a Do Not Travel warning on its routes.

It's thought emergency crews were called to reports of a 'suspicious' suitcase and some nearby homes have reportedly been evacuated.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said, “Just before 6pm this evening (Tuesday, 4th November), firefighters were called to reports of a suspicious item on Greek Street in Stockport.

“Two fire engines from Stockport and Whitehill fire stations, as well as the technical rescue unit from Ashton fire station, are currently at the scene where a suitcase has been left on the footbridge by Stockport railway station."

An Avanti West Coast spokesperson said: “Stockport station has been evacuated, and all lines are currently blocked.

"Customers are advised not to travel to the station and check our website or social media for latest updates.”

One man, Liam Smith, was in Stockport Interchange when the police came in and 'told people to evacuate' earlier tonight.

The station, off Wellington Road South was reportedly cleared as emergency crews attended the incident on the footbridge over Stockport railway
