LIVE: Birmingham Airport operations 'temporarily suspended' as flight diverted to Manchester

Operations at Birmingham Airport have been temporarily suspended due to a security incident on an aircraft.

It comes following reports that a suspicious device was allegedly found on board a plane, according to BirminghamLive.

An Aer Lingus Regional flight between Birmingham and Belfast reportedly rerouted back to the city after the discovery. The flight path of the flight shows that it only got as far as Market Drayon near Stoke-on-Trent before it was forced to turn back.

Birmingham Airport has confirmed that operations are 'temporarily suspended'.

Departure boards on the airport's website currently show all departing flights as delayed. Flights bound for Birmingham are diverting, including a Ryanair flight from Berlin which has landed in Manchester.

A number of flights due to depart tonight are currently showing as delayed by at least two hours, the current Birmingham Airport departures board shows.

Four flights scheduled to leave tonight have also been cancelled. They are:

Flights which were due to land in Birmingham are being diverted to East Midlands Airport, Manchester Airport and Bristol Airport.

Others are being turned back around, according to traffic data monitor Inrix.

The flight that turned back was Aer Lingus flight EAG47S which departed Birmingham at 15.52. It was due to land at Belfast at 16.25.

The flight path of the Aer Lingus flight shows that it only got as far as Market Drayon near Stoke-on-Trent before it was forced to turn back. Passengers were seen leaving the plane on a secure part of the runway as buses were brought in to take them back to the terminal while emergency services dealt with the incident.
