LIVE: Benjamin Mendy re-trial continues as ex-Manchester City star denies rape and attempted rape

The re-trial of footballer Benjamin Mendy continues today. The former Manchester City player, 28, denies counts of rape and attempted rape - allegations concerning two women.

The case is a re-trial. A jury previously acquitted Mr Mendy of other sexual allegations. The previous jury could not agree verdicts on the two outstanding counts he faces.

The alleged attempted rape of 'Woman One' is said to have happened in October 2018, while the alleged rape of 'Woman Two' is said to have happened in October 2020. Neither women can be named for legal reasons.

The trial judge is Steven Everett, the Honorary Recorder of Chester. He has told jurors the trial could last for up to three weeks.

Mr Mendy's contract with City expired on July 1. He has not stayed on at the Etihad.

Mr Mendy says he was abroad for knee surgery when he met Woman One, who alleges that the footballer raped her a year later.

He says he was living in Prestbury at the time and spent about a month abroad while he was injured.

Mr Mendy says he met Woman One in a nightclub, when he was out with two friends.

He was on crutches at the time due to his injury. He says he was drinking alcohol that night.

Mr Mendy says he didn't spend any time with Woman One that night, and says she spent more time with a friend of his.

She came back to an apartment with his friend, and Mr Mendy agrees he had 'nothing to do with her'.

Woman One visited Mr Mendy's home in October 2018 to see the footballer's friend, who she had met the year earlier abroad.

He says he didn't know she was coming to visit, and saw her at his home.
