LIVE: Air ambulance lands at Piccadilly Gardens after 'head-on crash between bus and tram'

Emergency services are swarming Piccadilly Gardens responding to an unfolding incident in Manchester city centre.

An air ambulance has landed on the grass area of the main city centre square after a bus and tram appear to have collided. The tram and bus have collided head-on outside the Betfred and Primark at the top of Mosley Street in the city centre.

Firefighters, road ambulances and police cars are all also at the scene. Images and footage of Piccadilly Gardens shows the tram and bus have been taped off to the general public.

Piccadilly Gardens is busy with pedestrians and many people around the bus stops just across from the collision, on Parker Street.

Due to the incident, trams are currently unable to serve Piccadilly Gardens, Market Street and Shudehill stops.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service, Greater Manchester Police, and North West Ambulance Service have all been contacted for comment.

There is a huge emergency service presence at the scene.

One eyewitness said: “There were loads of sirens and then we heard the helicopter. It’s looks bad - like a head on crash between the bus and the tram. Firefighters look like they are cutting
