Lisandro Martinez sends message to Raphael Varane after final Manchester United appearance

Lisandro Martinez has said it was a "pleasure" to play alongside Raphael Varane at Manchester United.

Varane made his final appearance for United at Wembley on Saturday, helping them beat Manchester City 2-1 in the FA Cup final. It was announced earlier this month that the Frenchman will leave the club when his contract expires at the end of June.

The former Lens ace joined United from Real Madrid in August 2021 and made almost 100 appearances for the club. Injuries, however, prohibited him from playing more games for the Reds.

Varane made his first start since the 4-3 defeat to Chelsea on April 4 in the clash with City, enabling him to join forces with Martinez in the heart of the back four for one last time. The duo formed an excellent partnership last season and United, unfortunately, were unable to rely on it as much as they would have liked this term.

Martinez posted on Instagram: "Brother, thank you for these two years we spent together, it was really a pleasure playing alongside you, I learned a lot. I wish you all the best, Rapha! You are a great one."

Last season, Martinez, who joined United from Ajax in July 2022, and Varane formed an excellent partnership in the heart of United's back four. They both played starring roles in helping the club chalk up 28 clean sheets in all competitions.

This season, United were unable to call upon either of them as much as they would have liked, particularly Martinez, who played just 14 times in total. The Reds recorded just 13 clean sheets in 52 matches across all competitions this term.
