Limerick manager Billy Lee departs after six seasons

Limerick football manager Billy Lee has announced his departure from the role after six seasons, the county board have confirmed in a statement.

It was confirmed that Lee, from Newcastle West, would be stepping down "with immediate effect."

"We would like to thank Billy for his enormous effort and the success he has delivered over the past six seasons, winning the Division 4 National Football League title, the McGrath Cup, gaining promotion to Division Two in the National Football League and reaching this years Munster Senior Football Final," the statement read.

Lee departs the role after a highly progressive few years in charge, having lifted Limerick from Division 4 to Division 2 during his stint, securing promotion to the second tier on the final weekend of the league in 2022 and guaranteeing their participation in the Sam Maguire competition.

They subsequently went on to reach this year's Munster final, beating Clare in a historic penalty shootout, before overcoming Tipperary in Semple Stadium. They shipped a heavy defeat to Kerry in the provincial decider before losing to Cork in the last-12 encounter in Páirc Uí Chaoimh.

Lee, a former player with the county, had in an earlier era served as a selector under Liam Kearns between 1999 and 2005.

Limerick county board chairman John Cregan commented: "I would like to thank Billy for his contribution to Limerick Football over the past six seasons and the success associated with him at the helm of our flagship football team. I wish Billy and his family every success into the future".
