Lille aiming to upset the odds against Chelsea

Lille manager Jocelyn Gourvennec insists his side can defy expectations again and meet the "enormous challenge" of toppling Champions League holders Chelsea.

Lille will pitch up at Stamford Bridge for the first leg of their last-16 clash with defending champions Chelsea on Tuesday.

Renato Sanches will need a late check after a calf injury, but the Frenchmen have a full squad otherwise.

Gourvennec believes Lille can punch above their weight again, having topped their Champions League group against all odds and predictions.

"We started the Champions League with difficulty, and no one saw us finishing first," said Gourvennec.

"We defied predictions and we responded well. It's an extra step tomorrow against a big club, the defending champions.

"The challenge is enormous, but the players are used to playing these matches. They have experience, we are well prepared for the match, and now we have to play it.

"We have to remember what brought us here and reach our full potential. Chelsea are very strong on the ball, they have very offensive patterns, and defensively they are strong too.

"They are complete, and strong. We will create opportunities but we will have to manage the weaker times."

Lille fended off RB Salzburg, Sevilla and Wolfsburg to top Group G in this year’s Champions League, teeing up their knockout draw with Chelsea.

This term’s Lille might pale in comparison to the outfit that claimed Ligue 1 glory last season, after several high-profile player departures and the exit of boss Christophe Galtier.

New manager Gourvennec knew full well he was inheriting a set-up in flux, but also a high-pressure job.

Lille have laboured to 11th place in France’s top flight so far this term, but are itching to pit their wits against the Blues.
