Ligue 1 has miked up referees for TV – an idea that ended badly in England
A mazon Prime miked up a referee in Ligue 1 recently, giving viewers a fascinating insight into the role of matchday officials. Communicating with colleagues, players and managers, all while trying to make crucial decisions, looks like a thankless task. It was not the first time a referee has walked out to the centre-circle wearing a wire. ITV did something similar in February 1989, when they listened in on David Elleray while he officiated a Millwall v Arsenal league match. The recording certainly made an impression.
George Graham’s side were top of Division One and on their way to winning their first title in 18 years, but a trip to the Den was a big test. The hosts had lost just two league matches at home all season and were enjoying a fine debut campaign in the top flight. The match became even more significant when Granada Television decided to film the referee for their Out of Order programme.
