Lidl issues urgent message over lager - with undeclared sulphur dioxide found

Lidl shoppers are being warned to check their beer fridges — after the company recalled one of its lagers.

The budget supermarket chain is recalling a portion of its Starovice Czech Lager. The store is warning customers not to drink it — if they have a sensitivity to sulphur or sulphites.

That’s because some bottles of the beer have undeclared sulphur dioxide inside, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) says. Issuing a warning through the FSA, the supermarket said: “Lidl GB is recalling Starovice Czech Lager 5.0 percent, 500ml — all stock, due to undeclared sulphur dioxide which is an allergen.

“If you have bought the above product, and have an allergy or intolerance to sulphur dioxide, we advise you not to drink it. Instead, return it to a Lidl GB store for a full refund, with or without a receipt.

“The recall of this item has now been extended to include all Best Before Dates. Lidl GB wishes to apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Only 500ml bottles are affected by the issue, the FSA says. It added: “This product contains sulphur dioxide, making it a possible health risk for anyone with a sensitivity to sulphur dioxide and/or sulphites.”
