Liam Scales feeling like Celtic equal to 'dream' Carter-Vickers as growing trust goes a long way under Brendan Rodgers

He’s gained the trust of Celtic’s manager this season.

And he’s undoubtedly got the faith of the club’s support. But crucially for Liam Scales, he says defensive partner Cameron Carter-Vickers now also knows he can rely on him. Their partnership at the heart of the Hoops’ rearguard is still in its infancy. But for large spells against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League in midweek, they looked like they’d been together for years. Only Alvaro Morata’s header to make it 2-2 spoiled a near-perfect display from Scales and Carter-Vickers.

They’re now Brendan Rodgers’ first-picks, which everyone knows is remarkable given where the Irishman has come from. But there’s no inferiority complex from the 25-year-old next to his £6million side-kick. Scales now feels like he belongs beside Carter-Vickers in Celtic’s defence. A relationship is developing on AND off the park as they engrave their names on Rodgers’ team-sheet.

Which is bad news for fellow defenders Maik Nawrocki and Gustaf Lagerbielke who are fighting to take Scales’ place. The new Republic of Ireland international is ready for that battle. And after a string of impressive performances together, Scales believes he’s now earned the trust of Carter-Vickers.

He said: “Cameron is a dream to play alongside. He’s got a bit of everything. He’s quick, strong, good in the tackle. Cam is good at defending the box and brilliant on the ball.

“I’m learning a lot from him. I’m not sure how many games he’s played now for Celtic but he’s been successful and is a massive player for the club. We’re both quite vocal with each other when we need to be.
