Liam Payne: Tributes paid to One Direction star, 31, following death

Tributes have been to former One Direction star Liam Payne following his death at the age of 31.

The singer died in a fall from the third floor of a hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina, according to reports in the South American country.

Liam was holidaying with his girlfriend Kate Cassidy. Liam, who was known for being one fifth of the mega-band, found fame in 2011 after appearing on The X Factor, when judge Simon Cowell placed him in a band with Louis Tomlinson, Harry Styles, Zayn Malik and Niall Horan.

After becoming one of the biggest pop groups in the world with five albums and four world tours, they went on indefinite hiatus in 2016.

Payne released his debut solo album LP1 in December 2019 which included the singles Polaroid and Familiar. He and Girls Aloud singer Cheryl share a son Bear, born in 2017, having been in a high-profile relationship between 2016 and 2018.

Tributes to Liam have already been pouring in on social media following his death.

In a post on X, Paris Hilton wrote: "So upsetting to hear the news of @LiamPayne passing. Sending love and condolences to his family & loved ones. RIP my friend."

Fellow X Factor contestants Jedward also paid tribute. They wrote: "RIP Liam Payne. Condolences to friends and family."
