Liam Farrell keen to become Wigan legend ahead of new deal

Liam Farrell believes he is hungrier than he has ever been and claims the rediscovery of the “Wigan way” will fire the Warriors to another Challenge Cup win.

The veteran back rower has been in outstanding form for Matt Peet’s side as they set about breaking St Helens’ recent stranglehold on the British game. 

The 31-year-old’s current Wigan contract is up at the end of the season but Love Rugby League understands he has already agreed a new contract to stay and finish his career with his hometown club.

“Only in my head have I ever considered leaving, it’s never got any further than that,” he said.

“I’m a Wigan lad and would have taken just playing one game for them. To have done over 13 years with Challenge Cup and Grand Final wins is more than I could ever ask for.”

Now one of the old heads in Peet’s side, Farrell believes the resurgence in the club’s fortunes is down to their focus on culture. Or to put it another way, going back to “the Wigan way”. 

So what is it?

“The Wigan way is being good people, enjoying each other’s company, working hard, and then competing on the field,” he told Love Rugby League.

“It sounds pretty simple but you need to turn up and do it every day to a high standard. Personally I’m still improving, as if I wasn’t then I wouldn’t be playing. I’d never want to be a player who doesn’t need to improve anymore as I pride myself on working hard. 

“The day I stop working is the day I retire. I’m hungrier than ever. I play this game to win.”

Farrell says a big inspiration for Saturday is to see his younger team-mates experiences the Cup final highs that he was fortunate to taste in 2011 and 2013. So what is his advice to those experiencing that big-match occasion for the very first time?

He said:
