Liam Cahill appointed as new Tipperary manager on three-year term

Liam Cahill has been installed as Tipperary hurling manager on a three-year term, the county board confirmed in a statement this evening.

Cahill, a Ballingarry clubman, stepped down as Waterford manager last week, an announcement which arrived shortly after news emerged that the Tipperary county executive had voted to remove Colm Bonnar as manager.

In a statement issued to the Tipperary county board following his appointment, Cahill said, "After managing the Tipperary underage teams to success in the past, it is a huge honour for myself, my family and my club to be appointed the Tipperary Senior Hurling Manager.

"I look forward to the challenges that lay ahead and will commence the assembly of my backroom team in the coming weeks"

An All-Ireland winner as a player with Tipperary in 2001, Cahill managed Waterford for the past three seasons, guiding them to an All-Ireland final in 2020, an All-Ireland semi-final in 2021, and a Allianz League success in 2022 before things ran aground in this summer's championship campaign.

Cahill had previously guided Tipperary's U21 side to All-Ireland titles in 2018 and 2019 and had been widely anticipated to take over the senior side in late 2018 until ex-manager Liam Sheedy arrived into the race.

He was subsequently heavy favourite to take over his native county late last year before opting to remain in Waterford.

Tipperary confirmed in a statement that Cahill would be joined on the management team by his regular coach Mikey Bevans, adding that additional members of the management team will be announced in the coming weeks.

Cahill's appointment will now go to the next county committee meeting for final ratification, the statement said.
