Leylah Fernandez saves five match points on course to second Monterrey Open title
Canadian teenager Leylah Fernandez saved five match points against Camila Osorio, on course to defending her title at the Monterrey Open.
The 19-year-old won 6-7 6-4 7-6 to win in Mexico for the second consecutive year and secure her second WTA title.
Fernandez battled back from a set down and saved five championship points in the decider. The Canadian recovered from losing her serve twice to take the final set in a tiebreak.
It’s the first title Fernandez has won since winning in Monterrey last year and she is now the third woman in the history of the event to win it in back-to-back years, after Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Garbine Muguruza.
This was by far Fernandez’s best showing in a tournament since last year’s US Open, where the teenager lost to Britain’s Emma Raducanu in a thriller.
Fernandez beat three of the tournament’s top 10 seeds en route to the final in New York –– beating Naomi Osaka, Elina Svitolina and Aryna Sabalenka.
