Lewis Hamilton turned up to presser wearing 3 watches, 8 rings, 4 necklaces & 2 earrings

Lewis Hamilton used the latest press conference in the build up to the Miami Grand Prix to once again push the issues that are important to him.

In this instance, it was around the FIA’s tightening up on the ban relating to wearing jewellery whilst racing.

He went out to the press conference wearing three watches, eight rings, four necklaces and two earrings, which seems a little excessive, but his point was made.

Hamilton is first and foremost an F1 driver, but in addition he is a philanthropist and a champion of causes that are important to him, such as racism, the environment and human rights, whilst he has other interests outside the sport such as music and fashion.

He uses his wealth and profile to influence the public and other larger organisations, and he has been successful at this throughout his career.

Whilst not carrying the same weight as some of these issues, the jewellery ban is something that Hamilton has deemed important enough to push back against.

He has said: “I’ve been in the sport for 16 years and I’ve been wearing jewellery for 16 years. In the car I only have my earrings on and my nose ring, which I can’t remove.”

This may just be a desire from Hamilton to wear what he wants in the car, or this stance might be pre-empting further creep of the FIA into areas of the drivers’ lives that Hamilton doesn’t want, and so is trying to head it off early.

Hamilton did receive support from other drivers, including Pierre Gasly, who added: “I also have religious items that I wear with me when I’m racing, which are important to me, and which I don’t feel comfortable not having with me driving in the car.”

It is an area that the FIA will need to decide how important it is to them.
