Lewis Hamilton: Highlights of Brazil masterclass prove it was one of the greatest weekends of racing ever

Lewis Hamilton gave his all right until the final lap of the 2021 Formula 1 season.

It looked as though Max Verstappen had it all sewn up when, with four races left to run, he had carved out a solid 24 point lead over the British superstar.

However, with a new engine in his Mercedes and a slimmest glimmer of hope, Hamilton embarked on what was very nearly one of the greatest comebacks in sport.

We all know that it would end in controversial heartache in Abu Dhabi, but the fact that it even got that close is a testament to what Hamilton managed to pull off in the final weeks of the season.

He was racing like a man possessed, winning three of the last four races to make himself the favourite going into the final weekend.

It was in Brazil however, that Lewis’ comeback reached its nadir.

Under immense pressure to carve out any sort of result, Hamilton was slapped with penalty after penalty that ultimately saw him start the sprint qualifying race on the Saturday in dead last.

What followed, was nothing short of motor-racing poetry.

Hamilton tore through the pack, overtaking at will to secure an incredible fifth place finish in the race.

Another penalty saw him shunted back to 15th on the gird for the start of the Grand Prix proper, giving him another mighty mountain to climb on the Sunday.

With more laps top work with, Lewis went about his work, carving up the field before, somehow, he had Verstappen in his sights.

He hunted him down and, with a brilliant set up, launched past his rival to claim the lead before going on to win.

Now, a brilliant highlights package of the weekend has emerged showing just how good Lewis was.
