Lewis Hamilton drops hint over future exit from Formula 1
Lewis Hamilton says that he cannot see himself in Formula 1 once he is in his 40s as he wants to have ‘some other fun things’ to be concentrating on.
The Mercedes star turned 37 in Januaryand is one of the elder statesmen on the grid, with Fernando Alonso the only man older in the field for 2022 with the Spaniard now in his 40s.
Indeed, racing into their fourth decade is something we’ve seen drivers doing a fair bit in recent years, with Kimi Raikkonen only retiring last year and Michael Schumacher returning in his 40s back at the start of the last decade.
Hamilton, though, appears to have no intention of doing the same, with him saying that he has not given it much thought but in the next couple of years he can see himself walking away from Formula 1.
“I haven’t thought about that number, because I’m 37 so I still have a bit to go,” Hamilton said.
“I honestly haven’t thought about it and don’t plan on being here past that age. Hopefully, I have some other fun things to get on with.”
Lewis made his debut back in 2007 and so is entering his 15th Formula 1 campaign, with him earning seven world titles along the way and over 100 Grand Prix race victories.
Indeed, he has impressed greatly and left an indelible mark on the sport, with him firmly in the conversation over who is the best driver we’ve ever seen on track.
He’ll be looking to take those benchmarks ever further in his final few years in the sport, too, but it sound as though it won’t be too long now before he does walk away.
Mercedes, of course, have George Russell as his team-mate now and many see him as a potential successor in terms of leading the Silver Arrows, so it’s clear there is thoughts about life after Hamilton beginning to generate.
