Lewis Ferguson: Bologna captain on 'beautiful feeling' after captaining side to historic Champions League win

Lewis Ferguson says it was a 'beautiful feeling' after captaining Bologna to their first-ever win in the Champions League last night.

The former Hamilton Accies star, who hails from Quarter, led the Italian Seria A side to a 2-1 win over German giants Borussia Dortmund in the league stage of the competition, taking his side up to 27th in the 36-team standings.

It is the latest fine achievement for the Scotland star after penning a contract extension in November, which will tie him to the club until 2028. The midfielder is back on the pitch following six months out with a knee injury that prevented him from playing at Euro 2024 last summer.

And asked about guiding Bologna to their historic win, Ferguson said: "Maybe it was the best moment of my career. I'd have to think about it, but it is certainly a beautiful feeling that is difficult to explain.

"I had faith in this team that we could come back and win - we always seem to do that here.

"We made history. I'm proud of this team.

"At first, I was a little scared about the knee, but now I'm fine, I feel better. The first few months were difficult: one day I felt fine, one day I had a little discomfort and another day I had pain.

"I'm still working on improving the strength and power of my knee, but on the pitch, I feel normal.

"We are playing some great football at Bologna and we are happy. I am playing a more defensive role in midfield. I actually played like this in Scotland five years ago."
