Let's not forget Ferland Mendy's insane goal line clearance when Man City were 1-0 up

Real Madrid are somehow through to the 2021/22 Champions League final.

In the 89th minute at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday night, Manchester City looked odds on to book a date with Liverpool in Paris.

Pep Guardiola’s side were 1-0 ahead in Madrid thanks to Riyad Mahrez’s stunner and 5-3 up on aggregate.

But in a dramatic turn of events, Los Blancos managed to take the game to extra-time courtesy of a stoppage-time brace from substitute Rodrygo Goes.

The Brazilian first converted inside the penalty area from Karim Benzema‘s cut-back, before stylishly planting a header past Ederson off Dani Carvajal’s cross less than two minutes later.

It was absolute carnage and Rodrygo almost scored a hat-trick in stoppage-time, but Ederson was able to stop him at the third attempt.

So the game went to extra-time and five minutes into it, Real Madrid were awarded a penalty after Ruben Dias’ rash tackle on Benzema.

Benzema grabbed the ball, stepped up and expertly fired the ball into the back of the net to make it 15 Champions League goals for the season.

The latest strike from the irrepressible Frenchman was enough to book Los Blancos’ place in the final.

Rodrygo and Benzema’s heroics wouldn’t have been possible without Ferland Mendy, though.

In the 87th minute of the match, the former Lyon left-back produced a miracle to prevent Jack Grealish from scoring a brilliant solo goal.

Mendy showed incredible reflexes to clear the ball off the line when it looked for all the world that City’s £100 million man would make it 2-0 and kill the tie as a contest.

Check out the moment of pragmatic genius…

Can we just appreciate that Mendy clearance. If it wasn't for him Real Madrid were dead and buried. #RMAMCI #UCL pic.twitter.com/u0hPtbbLLi
