'Let down' - Gary Neville reflects on Carlos Tevez's controversial transfer to Man City

Gary Neville has revealed that he felt ‘let down’ when former Manchester United teammate Carlos Tevez left the club to join Manchester City.

Tevez joined United on a two-year loan deal in 2007 and enjoyed an incredibly successful spell with the Red Devils; winning two Premier League titles and the Champions League.

However, after the conclusion of the loan he opted to sign for City on a permanent deal.

The Sky Blues had been taken over by Sheikh Mansour in 2008, and were starting to build a formidable side that would ultimately go on and win the title three seasons later.

Neville admitted he was disappointed by Tevez’s ‘lack of loyalty’ to the United cause, and couldn’t fathom why he would join a project such as City when he was already at a club that were winning top honours.

“At the time I felt let down a little bit and voiced it at the time," he revealed on Sky Sports.

“Carlos Tevez was some player with [Wayne] Rooney and [Cristiano] Ronaldo up front.

“Tenacity, class, goals, skill, defending, attacking, link-play, dribbling everything.

“I couldn’t understand how he would want to engineer a move to the closest rivals, City were building a project at the time but they weren’t anywhere where we were at United, we were playing in Champions League finals and winning them.

“I just couldn’t understand it, this lack of loyalty, you come to United and you embed yourself in the team, wed yourself to the club, you can’t go and play for them.”

Neville also felt Tevez was poorly advised by the team around him, and that despite the financial package he was offered, was surprised the Argentine didn’t feel any kind of allegiance towards the red half of Manchester.
