Leona Maguire six shots back after opening round in Thailand

Leona Maguire finds herself six shots adrift of the lead following the opening round of the Honda LPGA Thailand at Siam Country Club.

The world no. 27 posted a two-under round of 70 to open proceedings, with Taiwan's Pei-Yun Chien leading the way on eight-under.

Chien had an eagle and seven birdies on her card with a bogey on the par-four 14th proving the only blemish of the day.

South Korea’s Sei Young Kim was her closest challenger on day one as she sits two shots back, again just one bogey spoiling her card.

Maguire, who finished inside the top 10 at this event last season, opened with birdies at the first and third, split by a bogey at two, on a day when she hit 12 greens in regulation.

The Cavan golfer then posted seven straight pars before a birdie at the 11th. A bogey at 16 would be softened by a closing birdie on the par-five 18th to leave her in solid shape after Thursday’s play.
