Leon Edwards knew he could KO Kamaru Usman with a head kick when the UFC champion "froze" when the Brit feinted the same shot earlier in the fight.
Jamaican-born Brit Edwards was a huge underdog heading into his meeting with Usman last weekend, but defied the odds to knock out the Nigerian for the first time in his career. And in his first interview since leaving the Vivint Arena in Salt Lake City over the weekend, he explained how he prepared for the life-changing moment.
Speaking with Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour, Edwards told the host he knew he had the kick available to him when he feinted a similar shot, and felt Usman freeze. His brother Fabian, a top Bellator middleweight, was also roaring at him from the corner to throw the kick which would ultimately make him the champion.
“I set it up with inside leg kicks and stuff like that," Edwards explained after allowing the win to settle. "I knew it was coming. I thought in my head, ‘This is the shot.’ If it’s going to land, it’s going to land now or no and I didn’t look for it the whole fight. I thought this is the moment. This is going to land. I need it to land now.”
