Lenihan on Munster win: 'What a way to sign off'

Donal Lenihan hailed Munster's BKT URC final win over Stormers as an "incredible achievement" as the province bridged a 12-year gap for a trophy.

Against all the odds, Graham Rowntree's side won all three play-off games on the road and applied the coup de grâce with a late converted John Hodnett try to secure a 19-14 victory over the hosts and defending champions in South Africa yesterday evening.

"We've just borne witness to one of the greatest club games of all time," former Ireland and Munster captain Lenihan told RTÉ Sport.

"It was an incredible performance by Munster, they saved it for final, the game that matters.

"It was a real intense cauldron here in Cape Town, 53,000 supporters, about 1,000 of them Munster.

"They showed incredible character, they were outstanding in the first half. They kept fighting and that's been the way with Munster all year.

"They really were under the cosh for long periods in that second half but the try by Hodnett and even more importantly the conversion by Jack Crowley.

"The character of the side was immense. No northern hemisphere side has ever come down and taken away a trophy from southern hemisphere opposition so the magnitude of what Munster have achieved is incredible.

"What a way for us to sign off on a great season for Irish rugby, Grand Slam champions, now Munster winning here.

"Next time we are out, World Cup in September, we have something well worth looking forward to."
