Leipzig down Cologne to move up in league

RB Leipzig have temporarily entered the Champions League qualification zone with a 3-1 home defeat of Cologne in the Bundesliga.

Leipzig were seventh when they kicked off the game against Cologne, who were one point ahead of their hosts and also hopeful to join the league's top four.

But after some initial struggles to overcome the visitors' defence, Leipzig broke the deadlock in the 25th minute thanks to a precise free-kick from Christopher Nkunku.

Midfielder Dani Olmo doubled their lead in the 54th minute, and just three minutes later assisted Angelino to increase Leipzig's advantage.

Cologne reduced the deficit with Tim Lemperle on target in added time, but it was already too late for a comeback.

Leipzig are now fourth and in the Champions League spots for the first time this season, but could drop out again after the weekend games, while Cologne fell to seventh.

Some 15,000 fans were at the Red Bull Arena as Germany gradually lifts measures to limit the spread of the coronavirus.
