Leigh's Gregg Warburton ready for battle in wheelchair basketball semi-final with Paralympic medals on the line

Gregg Warburton believes the slate has been wiped clean after helping GB’s men’s wheelchair basketball team set up a second meeting with Germany in the Paralympic semi-finals.

Leigh native Warburton scored 22 points and provided seven assists as he played all 40 minutes of his side’s 84-64 win over Australia.

The win sees them face a team they have already comfortably beaten, defeating Germany 76-55 in the opening match of the pool stages.

"The number one message is that the game from the group has gone,” Warburton said, who is part of Aldi’s Nearest and Dearest programme in partnership with ParalympicsGB, helping to maximise support and minimise potential distractions for athletes so that they can focus on their performance.

“It is a clean slate, we have got a fresh opponent. We will take the good and the bad from that game and find out how we can do better in the small margins, the 1 per cents and keep taking care of the basics.

“I truly believe we will be in a good position at the end of the day if we keep doing that to a good level.”

GB now have a day to recover from a physical match against Australia, with the Tokyo bronze medallists only able to pull away in the final quarter.

Warburton drained two three-pointers in the first half to give his side momentum, also acting as cheerleader-in-chief even while on the court.

He added: “I just try and lead by example and hopefully my performance and my body language and the way I am on court brings people with me and if we all do that, we will be in a good position.

“We got off to a shaky start and then the second half we managed to start pretty well and it was waiting for a real run of shots to go our way and then some incredible shots by Ben Fox down the stretch.
