Leicester City duo declared fit to face Manchester United as Brendan Rodgers gives injury update

Jonny Evans and Wesley Fofana will be able to play together for the first time since the FA Cup final when Leicester City travel to Manchester United this weekend.

The two centre-backs have been declared fit to feature at Old Trafford on Saturday evening, when City’s campaign resumes following the international break. Due to their injury issues, they have not played together since the Wembley success last May, while in the Premier League the last game with both in the starting line-up was Southampton away last April.

Fofana made his comeback from a seven-month lay-off in Rennes, scoring on his first game back from the broken leg he suffered in pre-season, while Evans played for the first time in 2022 as a substitute in the 2-1 win over Brentford just before the international break. Now, both could be in the squad together.

Manager Brendan Rodgers said at his press conference on Thursday afternoon: “Jonny Evans will be available whether he’s able to play a whole game or not. Whether he starts or comes off the bench, we’ll see.

“It’s great to have him back. He’s had 60 minutes for the international team and looks very good. We have to build him up. Wesley will be back involved as well.

“Jonny is a player who has been a huge influence in my time here. He’s the one player who has played at the top level throughout his career and he has the view of the highest level.

“He practises that every single day. His standards are at the very highest level. His influence on the team is huge. He is not 100 per cent match fit yet, but we’ll work him through that until the end of the season, but it’s a big plus to have him available as well as Wesley.”

Rodgers also spoke of the mutually-beneficial outing Evans had for Northern Ireland
