Leicester boss Rodgers hails Tielemans after draw with West Ham
Youri Tielemans looks increasingly likely to leave Leicester this summer with no progress made in discussions over a new contract.
The Belgium midfielder was restored to the starting XI for the 2-2 draw with West Ham and equalised with a penalty in the 45th minute before producing a sparkling second-half display.
Although boss Brendan Rodgers said Tielemans had not turned down a new deal, all signs are that he will depart at the end of the campaign as the 24-year-old’s current deal expires in June 2023 – meaning he could leave for free if he were still at Leicester at that stage.
Rodgers said: ‘He has not declined (a new contract). His position is exactly the same. He is a fantastic player and there has been no movement. He has worked well and until his last days here, he will always give his best. He is a top professional and you saw his commitment today.’
Leicester’s second-half display was their best for some time yet they were undone again by their weakness from set pieces as Craig Dawson bundled in the equaliser in stoppage time – the 11th time Rodgers’ men have conceded from a corner in the league this term.
‘We know we have had difficulties with set pieces, we are aware of that,’ acknowledged Leicester’s Ricardo Pereira, who scored their second goal. ‘We knew we needed to concentrate more and we have to have to do better.’
