Leeds: Jesse Marsch 'already fighting' a 'difficult' battle at Elland Road

Leeds manager Jesse Marsch is already battling against the stereotype of being an American coach in the Premier League, according to journalist Dean Jones.

Marsch replaced Marcelo Bielsa at the end of last month, and has already endured the ups and downs of being a top-flight manager in England.

There were promising signs in Marsch’s first game in charge as Leeds created a number of changes away at Leicester.

They failed to take their opportunities, though, and ended up losing the match 1-0, with Harvey Barnes scoring a second half winner for the Foxes.

Any optimism that Leeds had coming out of that match was quickly dampened when they were thrashed 3-0 by Aston Villa five days later. In front of their home fans, Leeds were torn apart on a concerning evening at Elland Road.

However, they did bounce back on Sunday as Joe Gelhardt netted an injury-time winner against Norwich to hand Marsch his first victory.

Marsch is only the second American to ever manage in the Premier League after Bob Bradley, and he lasted less than three months at Swansea.

The new Leeds boss is also aware that the hit TV show ‘Ted Lasso’ has done little to prove that American managers can cut it in the dugout.

He has now got his first win under his belt, and Jones thinks Marsch will need his side to string some positive results together to silence the doubters.

Jones told GIVEMESPORT: “He has to make sure that it’s a platform that they now build on because being American and coming in as a coach in this league is so difficult, because of the way that you’re judged. Undoubtedly, he’s having to fight that already.”
