"Leeds are the frontrunners" – Journalist now drops exciting update on "top-class" 53-goal star
Leeds United are the frontrunners to sign New York Red Bulls striker Valentin Castellanos, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.
Jesse Marsch is targeting the American market having already brought in Brenden Aaronson from RB Salzburg and Castellanos could be the next man through the door at Elland Road.
Aaronson became Marsch’s first signing when he joined for a fee in the region of £22.2 million last month and the Leeds boss is hoping to make further attacking additions.
According to 90min, the Yorkshire giants are the team ‘most’ interested in signing the Argentine, who’s become one of the top prospects in Major League Soccer.
Last season, Castellanos was the top goalscorer in the division, scoring 19 goals in 32 games, and he’s continued his hot streak this term with 11 goals in just 17 outings.
Overall, the 23-year-old, described as ‘top-class‘ by manager Ronny Deila, has seen the net bulge 53 times in his Red Bulls career, which has attracted the attention of the Premier League.
The report states Manchester City rejected the chance to sign Castellanos following the arrival of Erling Haaland, although Pep Guardiola’s side have advised other top-flight clubs for his services, with Leeds top of the list.
And Jones reckons that despite interest in the past from West Ham, Newcastle, and Everton, they’re currently in pole position for the striker.
He told GIVEMESPORT: “He’s highly thought of and has been scouted by a lot of clubs. Man City are not going for him at this stage, but I think they would have had first option on him, so they’re opening up to other Premier League clubs, and right now, Leeds are the frontrunners.”
