Leaving St Johnstone was a wrench, but I'm at the right club, says Motherwell star

Liam Gordon says Motherwell is a fresh start for him and believes he has found the right club after a shock decision to leave St Johnstone in the summer.

Defender Gordon ended a nine-year spell in Perth, where he was captain, to join up at Fir Park and says he settled in straight away.

And Gordon says he knocked back offers from England and Scotland to sign a two-year deal with the Lanarkshire club.

He said: “It’s a fresh start. It was the way they sold the club, the ambition and the way they see themselves moving forward – I wanted to be a part of that.

“Ambition is a massive thing. You want to be better, I felt by coming here the manager could make me a better player, and I don’t see why you wouldn’t want to be that.

“I’m delighted to be at Motherwell. I had multiple conversations with the manager in the weeks leading up to it, and I just felt it was the right move for me and my family.

“He sold the club to me, talking for 50 minutes on the phone about his ideas and ambitions, and the main thing it came down to was the ambition that they have here, where they want to go, and it was something that I want to be part of.

“On a personal note, from the football side of things, I’m so delighted to be a part of the club.

“Since I came in it has been everything that I thought it would be, a really good family feel to it, all the boys have been brand new and the staff as well, so I’m delighted to be here.”

Perth-born Gordon admits it was a wrench to leave St Johnstone, but says it was the right time.

“I had other options, there were ones down south and a couple of other interests in the Scottish league, but after I put everything down I felt Motherwell was the right one for me, for sure,” he said.
