Leader Joe begins grassroots golf devt programme

The Leader Joe 1808 Foundation has started a developmental programme aimed at growing the country’s youth’s golf to international standard.

Part of the programme is the training of 100 young Nigerians, especially students, through the Leader Joe 1808 Foundation Golf Junior Championship.

Speaking in Abuja recently, Executive Director and founder of the 1808 Foundation, Leader Joseph Onu, said that 100 young aspiring players, from age five to 18 age, from eight states of the federation were invited for the championship.

He said: “We chose golf to promote education and peace, with some participants expressing their commitment to causes like supporting underserved communities or aiding less privileged individuals.

“We have more than 118 children under our scholarship scheme, a programme that has been ongoing for the past six years. We engage in community development, among other activities.”

He said that the Junior golf championship aims to familiarise young golfers with the proper way to play golf, fostering skill development, especially now that golf is an Olympic sport.

In his remarks, patron of the foundation, Major General G.A. Umelo (rtd) said: “Junior golf tournaments are a commendable initiative, providing opportunities we missed during our youth. I started playing golf at an advanced age.

“At this age, these young players are already building networks and friendships. This is not only vital for golf, but for other sports as well. Sports can unite us; the sooner we emphasise its importance, the better for all of us.”

Umelo highlighted the foundation’s commitment to empowerment, saying that it utilised funds generated last year for disadvantaged individuals in society.

He urged government at all levels and corporate bodies
