Lawyers for pal of Yousef Makki who gave 'self-serving' evidence argue coroner 'formed a view' he lied about 999 call BEFORE reaching conclusion

The coroner who ruled Joshua Molnar unlawfully killed Yousef Makki 'formed the firm view' that their friend Adam Chowdhary had lied in a 999 call to police BEFORE reaching formal conclusions, according to legal submission made to last month's landmark inquest.

Papers lodged by Chowdhary's legal team criticised Coroner Geraint Williams for allegedly concluding their client had lied 'without having first sought an explanation for what was said' before he reached his formal conclusions.

Even if he had lied, such a finding would not have helped the coroner rule on the central issue, whether Molnar had acted in self-defence, it was argued.

A second inquest into the fatal 2019 stabbing concluded last month that Molnar, the former public schoolboy son of wealthy parents from Hale, unlawfully killed Yousef, stabbing him through the heart.

Yousef, from a humble background in Burnage, was a bright straight A student at Manchester Grammar School, which he attended thanks to a bursary. Molnar was cleared of murder and manslaughter when he stood trial in 2019 although he served time for perverting the course of justice and possessing the knife.

The Makki family campaigned for an inquest but it failed to come to any significant conclusions and a second inquest, ordered following a successful judicial review, last month came to the conclusion Molnar had unlawfully killed Yousef.

Greater Manchester Police and the Crown Prosecution Service are now considering potential further steps.
