'Laughable' - Robbie Fowler slams Gary Neville's Man Utd manager suggestion

Former Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler has slammed Gary Neville’s Manchester United manager suggestion as ‘laughable’ and named an alternative candidate for the Old Trafford hot-seat.

United are yet to decide on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s long-term replacement, having been underwhelmed by the team’s progress under interim boss Ralf Rangnick since club legend Solskjaer was sacked in November.

The Red Devils look set to miss out on a top-four finish in the Premier League – currently sitting sixth behind north London rivals Tottenham and Arsenal – and were knocked out of the Champions League by Atletico Madrid last week.

Speaking after United’s Champions League exit, Neville suggested Manchester United should – but won’t – bring Atletico’s Diego Simeone to Old Trafford.

‘Diego Simeone should be a candidate, but it’s never been achievable to get him out of Atletico Madrid,’ Neville told Sky Sports.

But Neville’s former England teammate Fowler has labelled the suggestion ‘laughable’ and says Simeone would be hounded out of Manchester United ‘within weeks’.

‘I laughed this week when I heard Gary Neville shouting that his former club should make Diego Simeone their next manager,’ Fowler wrote in a column for the Daily Mirror.

‘Honestly, come on! I’m not saying he’s anti-football, but some of the antics his team get up to, some of the horrible stuff they do, and the tactics they pursue. Not at Manchester United.

‘The fans would be calling it out within weeks, and even if he actually won things with it, they wouldn’t put up with it for long.

‘United have a certain expectation about how they should be playing, which was laid down by Sir Matt Busby and Sir Alex Ferguson. Simeone doesn’t fit with that.
