'Last legs' - Ex-Manchester United striker makes brutal Cristiano Ronaldo Saudi Pro League jibe

The Saudi Pro League has seen an influx of European stars joining this summer in a £300million spending spree.

The likes of Sadio Mane, Riyad Mahrez, Jordan Henderson and Karim Benzema have moved to the middle east in the last few weeks and months, following Cristiano Ronaldo's high-profile transfer to Al-Nassr earlier this year. The former Manchester United man said at the end of his debut campaign in the country that the Saudi Pro League had the capabilities to challenge the very best European leagues.

Ronaldo said in July via ESPN: "The Saudi league is better than MLS. I opened the way to the Saudi league, and now all the players are coming here.

"In one year, more and more top players will come to Saudi. In a year the Saudi league will overtake the Turkish league and Dutch league.”

It's prompted discussions as to whether the league can rival the traditional European big hitters such as the Premier League, Serie A and La Liga as well as the Champions League. But ex-United man Dwight Yorke said any such notions were just delusions of the ageing players who have made the move out to Saudi Arabia.

Speaking to OLBG, Yorke said: "The age of the Saudi Pro League is not good enough to be in the Champions League. The players who have joined that league, such as Cristiano Ronaldo, N'Golo Kante and Karim Benzema, they were all in Europe when they were in their prime, they've gone to the Saudi Arabian league now they're in their mid-thirties.

"Everyone knows when you reach that age, you're on the last legs of your footballing career. Those big names resonate well with European football, but that's only because they were in their prime in Europe, they've gone to the Saudi
