Last-gasp equaliser helps Gallants draw with Stellenbosch FC
Stellenbosch FC and Marumo Gallants played out a 1-1 draw, with Gallants scoring late in the game to secure a point at the Danie Craven Stadium in Stellenbosch on Wednesday evening.
With a first half of few chances for either side, the first sight of goal came in the 10th minute as Stellenbosch's star midfielder Junior Mendieta provided a sublime early cross for youngster Mervin Boji to connect to, but his headed effort flew just wide of the goal.
Gallants almost immediately followed up the missed opportunity on the other end of the pitch with one of their own as striker Sibusiso Sibeko fired their only shot on goal in the half straight at Stellies' keeper Sage Stephens.
With manager Steve Barker urging the Cape side to apply more pressure, the best chance of the half fell to winger Devin Titus as he found himself with acres of space in the box but fired his shot straight at the hands of Washington Arubi, Gallants' goalkeeper.
While Gallants had the majority of possession early on, Stellies created the better chances in the half as Mendieta once again put Boji through on goal, with the young striker missing the chance to score his first top-flight goal.
Bottom of the table Gallants attempted to tighten up their defence with centre-back Samuel Nkomo making his debut for the Limpopo-based side.
This defensive change didn't help the away side's struggles as Stellies' Mendieta opened the scoring five minutes after the break. The midfielder started off a beautiful piece of play, passing the ball out wide to winger Devin Titus, who played a first-time ball into the box to find Mendieta.
