Lanes closed and emergency services on scene of crash on M56 near Manchester Airport - live updates

Drivers are facing severe delays on the M56 near Manchester Airport this afternoon following a collision. Two lanes are closed off eastbound between J4 (Wythenshawe) and J3A (Princess Parkway).

Congestion is backed up to J6 (Hale Four Seasons Roundabout) and according to Highways North West, could continue until the incident is cleared at 6pm.

Live motorway cameras show winding queues ahead of rush hour. The nature of the incident has not yet been confirmed, but Transport for Greater Manchester confirmed the emergency services are on the scene.

TfGM tweeted the news shortly after 3pm this afternoon. They said: "Heading towards Manchester via the M56? Two lanes are currently closed between #Wythenshawe & #PrincessParkway.

"Long delays building quickly - allow additional journey time if possible Emergency services on scene." Greater Manchester Police and the fire service have been contacted for more information.

The North West Ambulance service confirmed paramedics attended the crash.

One man has been taken to hospital. The nature of his injuries is unknown.
