Lando Norris has been suffering tonsillitis whilst racing in scorching Barcelona conditions

Lando Norris likely had the toughest race weekend of all at the Spanish Grand Prix, with him battling tonsillitis in over 30C heat at the Circuit de Catalunya.

It’s been a massively warm weekend here at the circuit just north of Barcelona, with the temperatures well into their 30s.

Of course, the drivers are used to competing in warm conditions and are physically conditioned to deal with them but, when they are feeling a little off-colour, going racing is hardly the ideal remedy.

For Lando, though, that was the dilemma this weekend with him suffering with tonsillitis and, ahead of the race, you could see he looked unwell.

He battled on, though, and earned an 8th place finish to take home four points, which is some effort, before speaking with McLaren’s media team after no doubt taking on copious amounts of fluid and getting checked over medically.

“Today was tough. I was feeling really unwell before the race as I’m suffering with tonsillitis, and that, in combination with the high temperatures, made this one of the hardest races I’ve ever done. I’ve been a bit on the backfoot this weekend as most of my energy has been spent fighting off this illness. I’ve had to miss a lot of engineering sessions, which has compromised my weekend, and I definitely wasn’t as prepared for the Grand Prix as I could have been. With that in mind, I’m really pleased to have come out of the race with decent points for the team.

“The team have been working really hard to bring performance to the car, so I’m glad we could take something from the weekend. We’ll look at the data over the next few days, see if there’s any additional performance we can extract from the car and make sure we’re ready to go for Monaco.”
