Lanarkshire karate kids in the medals at Meadowbank Open

Young members of Yamakai Karate Club started the competition year in style by winning several medals at the recent Meadowbank Open Youth event.

The club sent mostly novice competitors but returned with two gold, one silver and three bronze awards.

Gold medals were won by Fraser McAteer in the boys’ Kumite under 4’10, in which Fraser had to win seven matches, and Danil Kovalevskij in the boys’ 5’2 and over section. Danil had to win four matches for his medal.

Silver was won by the youngest member of the squad, five-year-old Theia McEwan, who won five matches from six.

Finally, the athletes taking home bronze medals on the day were Julia Ross in the girls’ under 5’3 section, Mila McLellan in the over 5’3 section and also Jayden Moran in the boys’ over 5’5 section.

Yamakai have classes in East Kilbride (Mondays and Thursdays) Hamilton (Wednesdays) and Strathaven (Saturday mornings) and are always on the look out for new members.

Beginners can start from five-years-old and above and receive the first two sessions free of charge.

Yamakai are members of Karate Scotland, the governing body for the sport, and all coaches are PVG checked and have Governing Body qualifications.

Anyone interested in trying karate can contact club/Scotland national coach Jim Ross, 6th Dan, on 07581776576 or email jimross@yamakai.co.uk for more details.
