Lanarkshire Karate Academy in the medals at top events overseas

Karate kids from an Airdrie club have been in fine form overseas during the last month.

Youngsters from Lanarkshire Karate Academy have been competing at top events and they produced a series of medal-winning displays at the Irish International Open in Dublin and the Polish International Open in the city of Bielsko-Biala.

Over in Ireland, the club claimed 15 medals, winning six gold, five silver and four bronze.

The winners were as follows:

Gold: Anna Smith - Girls Kumite 10–11 years under-35kg; Emmie McEwan - Girls Kumite 12-13 years under-42kg; Jodi Warwick - Girls Kumite 6-7 years; Sebastian Magilton, Dominic Griniuk, Kaito Hawkins, Jayden Warwick - Boys team Kumite 10-11 years; Ziva Alexander, Amelia Harvie, Lucia Scott, Jodi Warwick - Girls team Kumite 8-9 years; Heather Mackay, Emmie McEwan, Sebastian Magilton - Team Kata under 14 years.

Silver: Dominic Griniuk - Boys Kumite 10-11 years under-34kg; Sebastian Magilton - Boys Kumite 10-11 years +34kg; Ziva Alexander - Girls Kumite 8-9 years -28kg; Harrison Carty - Boys Kata 8-9 years; Sebastian Magilton - Boys Kata 10-11 years.

Bronze: Dominic Griniuk - Boys Kata 10-11 years; Jayden Warwick - Boys Kata 10-11 years; Harrison Carty - Boys Kumite 8-9 years +29kg; Dominic Griniuk, Harrison Carty, Jayden Warwick - Team Kata under 12 years.

Meanwhile, in Poland the team took home six medals for their efforts, winning three gold and three silver prizes in an event that boasted more than 2500 entries from over 30 countries.

Gold was won by Harrison Carty as well as brothers Kian and Kier McGeachy, while Emmie McEwan, Heather Mackay and Ziva Alexander claimed silver.
