Lanarkshire bowls stars take medals haul at World Championships Down Under

Lanarkshire stars played a major role in Scotland’s bowls World Championship success in Australia, winning three of seven medals from 11 disciplines.

Iain McLean from Lesmahagow followed up his Commonwealth Games bronze with an identical colour in men’s singles, after losing his semi-final 21-14 to Canadian Ryan Bester, who went on to win gold.

It was a similar tale for the women’s fours team of Hamilton’s Claire Anderson, Caroline Brown from Motherwell, Stacey McDougall and Carla Banks, who lost out in their semi-final to take bronze.

Anderson then teamed up with Emma McIntyre to win bronze in the women’s pairs, losing their semi-final to Malaysian pair Aleena Nawawi and Nahbila Tarmizi, who also went on to win gold.

The women’s triples team of Brown, Banks and McDougall finished third in section three with four wins, two defeats and a draw.

Kirkmuirhill’s Garry Brown and Danny Porter also exited the group stages in section 2 of the para men’s pairs competition.

Men’s singles bronze medallist Iain McLean told Bowls Scotland: “I’m delighted to come to this sort of level of event and medal.

“It’s maybe not the colour I’d have hoped for, but to medal at all is excellent and I’m delighted to have done so again.

“I’m proud to reach the latter stages. Coming from Scotland you always set the targets high and aim for gold, and I’m disappointed not to have got to that final game, but to medal at this level, at such a big event, I’m delighted.

“It has been great, it has been a great squad, a lot of good friends in it, there has been some good banter and good company.
