Everton raised eyebrows when they handed Dele Alli a lifeline in the Premier League in January, signing him from Spurs on a two and a half year deal. The structure of the deal was an odd one, with Tottenham Hotspur receiving no upfront fee for the midfielder. 

Everton have to pay for the midfielder in instalments based on appearances etc, however, they could look to cut ties without paying Spurs a single penny as per TEAMtalk.

Frank Lampard hasn’t been in the Everton dugout long, but he already has a tough call to make. Is Alli a player he genuinely wants at the club? If not, he will likely be freezing him out to save the club money rather than pay Spurs when they could certainly do without.

He does have Donny van de Beek at his disposal for this season after he was recruited in January and provides Lampard with added quality in the middle of the park to make potentially missing Alli not a big deal.

The pressure is certainly on Lampard, with Premier League survival still far from guaranteed for the Toffees. They sit just one place above the drop zone, with just three points between themselves and the relegation zone so Lampard could definitely do without this distraction.

The signing has been far from a hit at Goodison Park. Alli is yet to start a game for Everton in the Premier League, making six substitute appearances. That’s far from the impact you’d want from a potential £40m man.

In the six games he has played in, Everton have won just the one game, so there are clearly problems at the club on the pitch. The fact he still can’t get a start suggests he really isn’t fancied on Merseyside and is unlikely to be a success. If he is to be successful, it will take a massive turnaround and quickly.
