La Liga president puts Celtic and Rangers on alert with radical European breakaway idea threatening fresh football war

La Liga president Javier Tebas will throw his weight behind a new European breakaway to challenge the current authority within the continental game as fresh football war brews.

It will challenge the authority of the European Club Association - run by PSG chairman Nasser El-Khelaifi and where Celtic chairman Peter Lawwell is a board member - under the name Union of European Clubs. It will 'seek' to represent those clubs it considers to be outside the elite and 'is a significant change in the politics of club football' according to The Telegraph.

It's expected that the expanded new membership will include a number of Premier League clubs outside the big six, with Celtic and Rangers likely to fall into the outside the elite bracket under such a movement. Tebas will make a speech to a UEC conference in Brussels on Monday to explain its position as it intends. some of the influence ECA exerts over UEFA.

The report also states that 'the battle-lines are drawn for control of the football calendar - and its wealth - post-2024.' Both Premiership giants will enter the Champions League again next season but the format is to be revolutionised after next season under the Swiss model.
