Kyle Walker explains why new Man City star will be a 'nightmare' to stop

Kyle Walker isn't ready to admit defeat in a pace race with Jeremy Doku, but he's relieved he doesn't have to defend against him.

The Manchester City summer signing has already surprised Pep Guardiola at the club with a storming performance to help them come back and beat West Ham in just his second Premier League start. While he was back on the bench for the Champions League game against Crvena Zvezda, he came on for Bernardo Silva at the end of the first half and impressed again.

Doku's pace is a throwback for the Blues to when Leroy Sane rampaged down the wing in the team that won back-to-back titles in 2018 and 2019. The 21-year-old completed more dribbles than any player in the top five European leagues last season at Rennes and completed more take-ons than anyone bar Vinicius Junior and Lionel Messi. When Doku has the license to run at defenders, as he had at West Ham, he is going to cause problems.

There are few better in world football at keeping quick, tricky wingers quiet than Walker. Despite being 33, the full-back still possesses remarkable athleticism and speed and was pivotal to shutting down Real Madrid star Vinicius in the semi-final of the Champions League last season. The City captain will not yet accept that Doku can beat him over a distances, but explained how difficult it is to defend against somebody with those qualities.

“I'm winning it! Over five yards he’ll do me, but you know after 50, 60 metres, I'll catch him," he said. “I think you can see that in the last couple of games that he's played, the pace is frightening.
