Kyalami to host Grand Prix in 2023? F1 boss flies to SA to meet with officials

Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali will reportedly hold discussions on Monday with key stakeholders in South Africa over the possibility of an F1 race being held there in 2023.

On Sunday, Domenicali left from Azerbaijan and travelled to South Africa for the talks over a potential Grand Prix with Kyalami Circuit owners Toby Venter and Warren Scheckter.

The last F1 race at Kyalami was in 1993 and was won by Frenchman Alain Prost.

Scheckter Jnr. told RacingNews365.com in the past that they were working hard to get Kyalami returned to the F1 calendar.

"We're working hard with them to try and make sense of a business plan for South Africa," said Scheckter

"We're making good progress, but we still have some work to do. It's looking good but not done yet.

"I don't think we'd want to go beyond 2024; we haven't given up hope on '23, but it's unlikely because of the congested calendar.

"Logistically, it's a tight timeline for us. If we were to look at 2024, it will be the absolute latest if we were to do it, so, yeah, we wouldn't go beyond that."

The SA Grand Prix Corporation was founded in 2015, and they have been trying ever since to get a race in South Africa back on the F1 calendar.

But with several races on the calendar set to expire after 2022, including Monaco, Belgium and France, Formula 1 is pushing for a new race to be included in 2023.

The most suitable time-frame weather-wise for a Kyalami race would be the March-April and October-November windows.
