Kobbie Mainoo tipped for big Manchester United future after Real Madrid show of faith

Former Manchester United striker Andy Cole believes Kobbie Mainoo has a bright future at Old Trafford after enjoying a positive pre-season.

The 18-year-old midfielder has been in and around the United first team squad for around a year but started to make an impression on boss Erik ten Hag when he made his FA Cup debut against Reading in January. This was soon followed by his Premier League bow against Leicester City in February as Mainoo continued to blossom with the Reds' U21s.

United's faith in Mainoo has been highlighted by this summer's pre-season with the Stockport born player starting in the victories against Leeds, Lyon and Arsenal. Against the Gunners, the teenager assisted Bruno Fernandes for United's opener leading to the captain praising his potential.

Mainoo then earned a start against Real Madrid in Houston, Texas, in another show of faith from Ten Hag. Speaking about the 18-year-old's potential prior to kick off, Cole was adamant the youngster has what it takes to make it at Old Trafford.

He told MUTV: "What I have seen from him this season? No [I am not surprised he is starting against Real]. I think he has got a massive future ahead of him if he keeps playing like that. He is playing like that at 18, it is all in front of him. His pre-season performances have cemented him in Manchester United's squad going forward.

The transfer window is in full swing and United have already got their hands on two players, with Mason Mount and Andre Onana through the door at Old Trafford
