"Know he is a big admirer" - Journalist drops Gerrard claim after AVFC report on £70k-p/w star

Aston Villa selling John McGinn this summer would be a “massive surprise”, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

McGinn has spent the last four years at Villa Park, but it has been reported that he could be offloaded this summer.

The 48-cap international has racked up 147 appearances for Villa since 2018, and featured in all but three of their top-flight matches last term.

However, as reported by Football Insider, Villa boss Steven Gerrard would be willing to listen to offers for the midfielder, who still has three years left on his contract.

The same report claims that McGinn is not the easiest player to manage behind-the-scenes, and it seems that the club may be starting to lose patience with the 27-year-old.

O’Rourke has stated that it would come as a shock to see McGinn leave as he believes that the Scot is highly-rated by Gerrard.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, O’Rourke said: “It will be a massive surprise to see Steven Gerrard consider letting John McGinn go because I know he is a big admirer of the midfielder. It will be a huge decision for Villa this summer, what they do with McGinn.”

Villa have already signed two midfielders in the shape of Philippe Coutinho and Boubacar Kamara in the opening weeks of the transfer window, with Gerrard wasting little time in freshening up his squad.

The ex-Rangers boss can also call upon Douglas Luiz, while he has some exciting talent coming through in the middle of the park such as Jacob Ramsey, Carney Chukwuemeka and Tim Iroegbunam.

With so many players to choose from, it would not be a major surprise to see Gerrard offload one or two midfielders, but getting rid of McGinn would not be the obvious choice.
