Klaasen sold for R10.8 million at record-breaking 2023 IPL auction

Five South African cricketers were sold during the past weekend's Indian Premier League (IPL) auction in Kochi.

Proteas wicketkeeper-batter Heinrich Klaasen fetched the highest price of the South Africans as he was involved in a fierce bidding war between the Delhi Capitals and Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Despite having a base price of INR 1 crore, Klaasen was eventually sold for a whopping INR 5.25 crore (R10.8 million) to the Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Klaasen will play his third IPL season and return to the lucrative competition since 2019, having once represented the Royal Challengers Bangalore and Rajasthan Royals.

Proteas batter Rilee Rossouw was the highest South African bought despite going unsold in the previous round.

Rossouw, who has a base price of INR 2 crore, will make his IPL return as he was bought for INR 4.6 crore (R9.5 million) by the Delhi Capitals.

Rossouw, who scored a century at this year's T20 World Cup against Bangladesh, had previously played for the Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2011.

Titans batter Donovan Ferreira, who was part of a bidding war in the inaugural SA20 auction earlier this year, also turned heads at the IPL auction.

Ferreira, who fetched R5.5 million for the Joburg Super Kings, will be making his IPL debut next year after he was sold for INR 50 lakh (R1 million) to the Rajasthan Royals.

Proteas all-rounder Marco Jansen's twin brother Duan will also make his IPL debut next year as he was sold for INR 20 lakh (R407 779) to the Mumbai Indians.

Marco was retained by the Sunrisers Hyderabad and will likely face his twin in next year's competition.

Meanwhile, former Proteas all-rounder and now-Namibia player David Wiese was sold to the Kolkata Knight
