Kieran Tierney: Scotland's belief of qualifying hasn't wavered after Germany defeat in Euro 2024 opener

Kieran Tierney insists Scotland maintain belief of qualifying from the group stages of a major tournament for the first time after their sobering defeat to hosts Germany in last night's opening game of Euro 2024.

A dream occasion turned into a nightmare for the Arsenal defender as Scotland suffered a mauling in Munich, losing 5-1 in front of millions watching across the world.

The Tartan Army descended on Germany in their droves to back the team but Steve Clarke's side didn't turn up at the Allianz Arena, leaving huge question marks ahead of the remaining games in Group A against Switzerland in Cologne on Wednesday night and Hungary next Sunday in Stuttgart.

However, Tierney insists the heavy defeat doesn't change anything for their ambitions and the squad can still become history-makers. The Muirhouse man said: "We believe. We knew this game was not going to qualify us or not qualify us. These next two games are so important and that’s the message the manager just gave us after the game.

"It’s about the next two games and believing we can do it. I know we’ve got the quality in the squad to go on and do it and to give a better account of ourselves, for sure.”

Some 200,000 Scots are believed to have travelled to Germany to back the team at their first major tournament on foreign soil since the 1998 World Cup in France and Tierney thanked the Tartan Army for their support in the build-up.

He added: "They have been unbelievable and we can't thank them enough. We've seen the videos, when we walked out today, they're amazing, the noise they were making.

"It helps us so much and we're gonna need them for the next two games, no doubt."
