Kieran Lee on overcoming injury & how Bolton Wanderers squad decisions are helping his career

Bolton Wanderers midfielder Kieran Lee is well and truly over the injury problems which curtailed his campaign last season and believes being in and out of the team is helping him so far in 2022/23.

Lee joined Wanderers originally in January 2021 after being released by Sheffield Wednesday following eight years at Hillsborough. He has played more than 50 times for Wanderers in all competitions since then.

He has been in and out of the Bolton first team this season so far as Ian Evatt manages the veteran's game time due to competition in midfield and different games perhaps suiting Lee more. He was out of action for much of the second half of last season due to a heel spur problem which required an operation.

Lee has now put those problems firmly behind him. The squad rotation done by boss Evatt is helping the midfielder and allows younger members of the squad to put more of the hard yards in during matches.

Speaking to the club programme, Lee said: “I’m over that (injury) and I feel fine. I feel as as good as I always have. I’ve been in and out a little bit so far this season with rotating the team quite a lot, which is probably helping me, but every time I’ve been on the pitch I’ve felt it good.

“A lot of the lads here are young and building their careers, so it’s nice to help them and they can run for me I suppose!"

Lee was on the scoresheet over the weekend in the victory over Charlton Athletic for his first strike of the campaign and was one of the highlights of the performance. He also notched an assist in the recent Carabao Cup exit at the hands of Aston Villa.
